Buch: Understanding and Being

Titel: Understanding and Being

Stichwort: Selbsterkenntnis, Unmöglichkeit einer Revision

Kurzinhalt: self-knowledge; die Möglichkeit einer Revision setzt immer schon diese 3-fältige Struktur voraus; fundamental invariant pattern

Textausschnitt: () Let us suppose that there occurs a revision. The revision will be based upon further data. The further data may be given either by external sense or by internal consciousness, by the subject present to himself; so to have a reviser there must be external sense or internal consciousness. Unless we have that we cannot get further data; we cannot have any data at all. Moreover, if there is to be a new theory, we hope it is something intelligent. If it is intelligent, it will result from insight. Again, we hope we will be able to express it. It is not enough to say, 'I have a wonderful insight into what knowledge really is, but I can't tell you what it is.' We hope we will be able to conceive it. Moreover, it will have to be not simply a theory but a verified theory. When the new theory is proposed we will want to know whether it is right, or if it is better than the old one; so there will have to be critical reflection in the new theory. Again, if we are going to accept the new theory we will want to grasp the unconditioned; so there will have to be the grasp of the 'nconditioned. On that grasp of the unconditioned will depend the judgment, otherwise we would be unreasonable. So the possibility of a revision presupposes this analysis.

... we have arrived at a fundamental invariant pattern. Any future advance in self-knowledge may fill out this pattern with further details, may enrich it with all sorts of conclusions; but to be a revision it has to preserve this pattern.
